Custom GPTs (GPT Builder)

by OpenAI

Custom GPTs are tailored versions of ChatGPT you build with no code using the GPT Builder. You give it a name, a description, and standing instructions, optionally upload knowledge files, and toggle built-in tools (web search, image generation, Advanced Data Analysis) and custom Actions. The result is a purpose-built assistant you can pin, reuse, and share via link or the GPT Store.

Works with

Custom GPTs, Actions, MCP connectors, and Apps.

When to use it

  • You repeat the same setup prompt across many chats and want it baked in
  • You want a task-specific assistant grounded in your own reference documents
  • You want to share a consistent workflow with teammates or the public

When not to

  • One-off questions where a normal chat (or Custom Instructions) is faster
  • Workflows that need programmatic API access — build on the API/Assistants instead of a GPT

What it does

  • Define persistent instructions, tone, and behavior once and reuse them every session
  • Attach knowledge files the GPT can reference (retrieval over your uploads)
  • Toggle built-in tools — web search, image generation, Advanced Data Analysis — and add custom Actions
  • Publish privately, share by link, or list in the GPT Store

How to install

Setup steps with copy-paste config. Sources are cited under each method.

Build in the GPT Builder

ChatGPT

Requires: A paid ChatGPT plan that includes GPT creation · A web browser

  1. Open the builder

Go to Explore GPTs in the ChatGPT sidebar (or chatgpt.com/gpts) and choose Create.

  2. Describe it in the Create tab, then refine in Configure

The conversational Create tab drafts a first version; switch to Configure to set Name, Description, Instructions, and Conversation starters directly.

  3. Add knowledge and tools

Upload reference files under Knowledge, and enable Web Search, Canvas, Image generation, or Code Interpreter & Data Analysis as needed. Add Actions to call external APIs.

  4. Save and choose visibility

Save the GPT and pick Only me, Anyone with the link, or publish to the GPT Store.

How to prompt it

Draft a support-reply GPT

You answer the same kinds of customer questions daily.

Create a GPT that answers billing questions in our brand voice. It should be concise, never promise refunds, and always link to the docs I upload. Ask me for the tone guidelines and the docs.

What to expect: The builder scaffolds instructions and conversation starters, prompts you to upload the docs as Knowledge, and produces a shareable support assistant you can refine.

  • Put hard rules ('never promise refunds') in Instructions, not just Knowledge — instructions are followed more reliably.
  • Keep Knowledge files focused; large, unfocused uploads dilute retrieval quality.

Tips for getting the most out of it

  • Iterate in the Configure tab for precise control; the conversational Create tab is best for a rough first draft.
  • Treat instructions as a spec: state what to do, what to avoid, and how to format answers.
  • A GPT's uploaded Knowledge can be surfaced to users — don't upload anything you wouldn't share.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to code to build one?+

No. The GPT Builder is no-code for instructions, knowledge, and built-in tools. Coding only enters if you add a custom Action, which needs an OpenAPI schema for the API you're connecting.

Who can use a GPT I build?+

You control visibility: keep it private, share a link, or publish to the GPT Store. Using most custom GPTs requires the viewer to have an eligible ChatGPT plan.
